Bono
East — Ghana's geographic heart.

Techiman markets, Digya wildlife & Volta's quiet shore.

Bono East is Ghana's middle ground — literally. Its capital Techiman sits at one of West Africa's oldest trading crossroads, and the region stretches east to the vast, silent waters of Lake Volta at Digya National Park.

The Overview

Ancient markets,
vast waters.

Bono East Region was carved from Brong-Ahafo in 2019, with Techiman as its capital. This is the geographic middle of Ghana — the place where the savannah meets the forest, where north-south trade has passed for centuries, and where Techiman Market is still considered one of the most important in West Africa. Merchants from Burkina Faso, Togo, and Niger still bring their goods here every week.

East of Techiman, the region opens out onto the western shore of Lake Volta and the forests of Digya National Park — Ghana's second-largest wildlife reserve, home to elephants, baboons, and over 230 bird species. It's wilder, wetter, and quieter than Mole, and reached mostly by boat. A travel region that rewards the slow traveller.

“Bono East is where Ghana's geography — and its trading history — meet.”
