Gambaga Escarpment
A dramatic ridge looking north toward Burkina Faso — one of northern Ghana's most spectacular landscapes.
North East is one of Ghana's newest regions — created in 2019 and centred around the ancient Mamprusi kingdom at Nalerigu. The land lifts here into dramatic scarps and rolling hills, and the quiet town of Gambaga looks out over a 50-kilometre view.
North East Region sits at the edge of Ghana's northernmost highlands — where the savannah begins to rise into scarps and hills, and where the ancient Mamprusi kingdom has been seated at Nalerigu for centuries. It's one of the country's newest administrative regions, but its culture and geography are some of the oldest stories Ghana has to tell.
The Gambaga Escarpment is the region's landscape centrepiece — a dramatic ridge with views across the plains toward Burkina Faso. Nakpanduri offers another scarp worth the hike. And in Nalerigu itself, the Mamprusi royal palace and the ancient Nalerigu Wall — a defensive earthwork that once enclosed the capital — give you a tangible connection to a kingdom that predates colonial Ghana by generations.
