Western
Region — Ghana's quiet, wilder coast.

Rainforest, surf, stilt villages & old forts.

Western Region is where Ghana softens into palm groves, where waves break cleanly onto empty beaches, and where an entire village stands on stilts above a sacred lake. It's the country's secret coast — and its last great rainforest.

The Overview

Ghana's
wilder coastline.

Western Region is the Ghana fewer travellers know — and many never want to leave. It's where the Atlantic meets dense mangrove estuaries, where surfers ride empty breaks at Busua, and where the entire village of Nzulezu floats above a sacred lake on wooden stilts. The region's rhythm is slower, greener, and more rooted in nature than anywhere else on the Gulf of Guinea.

Beyond the beaches, Western holds the country's last true rainforest — Ankasa Conservation Area — home to forest elephants, bongo antelope, and hundreds of bird species. And on the coast itself, a string of whitewashed colonial forts stands watch: Fort Apollonia at Beyin, Fort Santo Antonio at Axim, and the port city of Sekondi-Takoradi in between.

“Western is the Ghana you come back for after you've seen the rest.”
